UN chief urges leaders to prevent new South Sudan civil war

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urgently called on global leaders to unite and prevent South Sudan from descending into another devastating civil war.

Guterres warned of a “security emergency” marked by escalating clashes and political turmoil, including the recent government arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar.

He stated that ethnic targeting and misinformation are dangerously reminiscent of the 2013 and 2016 conflicts, which resulted in 400,000 deaths.

The UN chief stressed the need for South Sudan’s leaders to end confrontational politics, reinstate the unity government, and release detained officials.

He implored the international community, as guarantors of the fragile 2018 peace agreement, to speak with a unified voice in support of the peace process.

Guterres announced UN support for the African Union’s Panel of the Wise and Kenya’s special envoy’s diplomatic efforts in Juba.

South Sudan’s government confirmed Machar’s house arrest, citing an investigation into subversive activities while asserting the peace agreement remains intact.

However, Machar’s opposition claims the agreement has been effectively nullified.

Guterres emphasized the UN’s hope that the diplomatic visits will lead to the restoration of the peace agreement and lasting stability in South Sudan.
