UN envoy courts TASIS to revive Sudan peace track

The United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, arrived in Nairobi on Tuesday to open a channel with the Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS), an RSF-aligned coalition that recently announced parts of a rival administration, according to local media and statements attributed to the envoy. TASIS figures said they welcomed engagement with the UN.

Lamamra said he had returned to the region, starting in Nairobi, to discuss peace efforts with all Sudanese actors — including the newly formed TASIS — and urged them to enter “constructive dialogue,” in line with recent Security Council messaging.

The outreach follows months of UN backing for Lamamra’s good-offices role; Council members reiterated their full support for his efforts in an Aug. 13 press statement. The UN has previously stressed that such contacts aim to reduce violence and advance talks, without implying recognition of any party’s governmental claims.

TASIS emerged this year from RSF and allied political groups that adopted a transitional framework in Nairobi and later named Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’aishi as prime minister for a self-declared administration centred in Nyala — a move critics say deepens Sudan’s institutional fragmentation.

Lamamra, a veteran Algerian diplomat appointed in late 2023, previously convened proximity talks between the SAF and RSF in Geneva in July 2024 and has briefed the Security Council on Sudan repeatedly this year.
