UN envoy holds consultations in Nairobi on ending the war in Sudan

UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Ramtane Lamamra held consultations in Nairobi with the Civil Democratic Revolutionary Forces (known as “Sumoud”) on steps to stop the war in Sudan.

Sumoud’s delegation was led by secretary-general Al-Sadiq Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, spokesman Dr. Bakri Eljack, leadership member Dr. Hiba Al-Makki, and youth sector head Abu Al-Qasim Fadl Al-Sayyid.

In a statement, Eljack said the group presented its reading of the conflict’s drivers, the devastation it has caused, and the risk of further spillover that could destabilize the region. He outlined what Sumoud views as the UN’s role in halting and ending the war.

The coalition urged prioritizing civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access, and the launch of an inclusive political process to build sustainable peace and stability in Sudan and the wider region.

Eljack stressed there is no military solution to the crisis and called on regional and international actors to press the belligerents to accept mechanisms that guarantee aid flows, protect civilians, and move to negotiations without preconditions.

The delegation also argued that disputes over “legitimacy” among the warring parties should be separated from efforts to stop the fighting, warning that conferring legitimacy on any side has prolonged the conflict and implicitly endorses a military outcome.

Sumoud asked the UN to help unify mediation tracks and prevent forum-shopping by the parties, saying any negotiated settlement should be handled as a single package built on three strands: humanitarian action and civilian protection; practical ceasefire arrangements; and the initiation of a political process.

According to the statement, the delegation also heard the UN’s vision and roadmap for advancing peace and stability in Sudan.
