UN’s Lamamra widens Sudan talks, meeting TASIS in Nairobi

The United Nations Secretary-General’s envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, met Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu in Nairobi on Friday to discuss paths to end the war, according to a statement from the Sudan Founding Alliance (known as TASIS), which has announced a rival administration in parts of the country. The meeting was held at Lamamra’s request, local outlets said.

TASIS said other figures attending included council member al-Tahir Abu Bakr Hajar, East Sudan regional governor Dr. Mabrouk Mubarak Salim and South Kordofan/Nuba Mountains governor Jgoud Mukwar Murada.

The Nairobi stop is part of a new push by Lamamra to engage Sudanese actors across the spectrum. On Thursday he held talks in the Kenyan capital with the Somoud civilian coalition led by former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok on ways to halt the fighting, according to Sudanese media.

Lamamra posted that he had “returned to the region, starting with Nairobi,” to discuss peace efforts with Sudanese groups “including the newly established Tasis,” urging “constructive dialogue” in line with recent Security Council messaging.

From Nairobi, Lamamra is expected to travel to Port Sudan for meetings with authorities and other stakeholders, Radio Tamazuj reported. UN noon-briefing materials this week said he is intensifying his good-offices efforts on Sudan.
