US Blinken expresses regret over failure to end Sudan war

Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed deep regret on Thursday over his inability to halt Sudan’s devastating war.

At his farewell news conference, Blinken acknowledged that despite diplomatic efforts, the ongoing conflict has left tens of thousands dead and displaced over 12 million people.

The Sudanese war, raging since April 2023, pits the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leaving millions teetering on the brink of starvation.

“It is a real regret that we haven’t achieved success in ending the suffering of the Sudanese people,” Blinken lamented.

While diplomatic strides improved humanitarian access, he noted these gains fell short of halting violence or curbing abuses.

“We’ll keep working at it until the last moment, and I urge the next administration to continue this fight,” he added.

The US Treasury Department announced sanctions on Burhan for orchestrating attacks on civilians.

The Burhan’s army stands accused of bombing schools, markets, and hospitals while weaponizing hunger by blocking aid access.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo emphasized the US commitment to disrupting arms supplies and holding leaders accountable.

“Today’s actions highlight our resolve to end this conflict and protect innocent lives,” Adeyemo stated firmly.
