US pledges additional $424M in humanitarian aid for Sudan

The United States will provide an extra $424 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced Wednesday.

The country has been embroiled in conflict since mid-April last year, when a power struggle broke out between the General al-Burhan’s Sudanese army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces, derailing a planned transition to civilian rule.

“More than 25 million Sudanese are suffering from severe hunger, with many facing famine… and around 11 million have been displaced, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises,” said Thomas-Greenfield.

She emphasized the need to pressure both sides to agree to humanitarian pauses in al-Fashir, Khartoum, and other critical regions, to ensure access to aid and push for peace talks.

This new funding brings the total U.S. humanitarian support for Sudan since the conflict started to $2 billion, according to the U.S. mission to the U.N.
