The U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, condemned reports of retaliatory actions against civilians in Wad Madani by General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF), describing the violations as “horrific” and calling for an immediate end to the violence.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Perriello urged SAF and affiliated militias to take swift action to investigate the abuses and hold those responsible accountable.
Rising International Concern
The remarks come amid growing international alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, exacerbated by escalating violations by the SAF that are deepening civilian suffering.
Earlier on Tuesday, the SAF acknowledged “isolated violations” by some of its personnel in Gezira State, following its recent takeover of Wad Madani. The admission follows accusations of ethnic cleansing and indiscriminate killings in the city.
Ethnic Targeting Allegations
Rights groups and political organizations have accused the SAF of targeting civilians and detaining women in what they describe as a racially motivated campaign against the “Kanaabi” communities in central Sudan’s Gezira State.
According to Sudan Tribune, the alleged crimes include killings, abductions, torture, and humiliation, all constituting clear violations of international humanitarian law.
The escalation of violence has added to the ongoing crisis, with reports of airstrikes killing dozens, including ten civilians south of Khartoum, and an entire family allegedly wiped out in a military raid.
Global voices continue to press for accountability, calling the situation a stark reminder of the urgent need for justice and peace in Sudan.
