Violence escalates in Sudan as drone attacks hit market area

Drone strikes in Sudan’s Kordofan region killed two children and wounded 12 others on Wednesday, as violence deepens across the frontline.

A drone hit a traditional Koranic school in El-Rahad, North Kordofan, leaving classrooms shattered and students bleeding.

“I saw a dozen students injured,” eyewitness Ahmed Moussa told AFP, describing panic as children fled the scene.

In Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, another drone strike struck a United Nations food warehouse.

A UN source said the blast damaged the building and destroyed supplies meant for famine-stricken families.

The source, speaking anonymously, said it was unclear which side carried out the attack.

Last week, a drone strike also hit a World Food Programme convoy heading to El-Obeid, killing one person.

Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and uprooted around 11 million people.

The conflict has effectively split the country, carving battle lines across its cities, towns and rural heartlands.

Kordofan has emerged as one of the fiercest theatres, where drone fire and hunger stalk civilians daily.

A UN-backed report confirmed famine in Kadugli since September, with Dilling facing similarly severe food shortages.

Since October, more than 115,000 people have fled southern Kordofan as fighting and air attacks intensified.

UN rights chief Volker Turk said about 90 civilians were killed and 142 injured in drone strikes over two weeks.

He said strikes hit markets, health facilities and residential areas across North and South Kordofan.

The World Health Organization reported three health facilities were attacked in early February, killing 30 people including five children.
