Burkina Faso junta prolongs anti-radical emergency measures

The military leadership in Burkina Faso has opted to extend a series of emergency measures designed to combat radical violence for another year.

Originally, the decree allowed for the conscription of all individuals over the age of 18 who were deemed physically capable. Additionally, it permitted the restriction of people’s rights and freedoms while legalizing the formation of local defense groups.

Observers note instances where critics of Burkina Faso’s military regime have been forcibly taken and compelled to participate in combating radical militants.

Since 2015, the relentless radical violence has led to the displacement of over two million people.
