Nigerian authorities are investigating popular transgender celebrity Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, for allegedly throwing money around at a film premiere last month.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched the probe after a video emerged showing Bobrisky “spraying and flaunting wads of new Naira notes.”
While throwing money in celebration is a common practice in Nigeria, it’s actually prohibited by law.
The Central Bank considers such acts as “defacing the currency” and a form of disrespect towards the nation. Penalties for violating this law include imprisonment or fines.
This investigation comes amidst a broader context of discrimination against LGBT individuals in Nigeria.
Homosexuality is illegal in the country, and LGBT people frequently face harassment and intimidation from law enforcement.
The EFCC has confirmed that Bobrisky was questioned at their Lagos office and could face charges in court once the investigation concludes.
This follows a similar case in February where actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin received a six-month prison sentence for a video showing her spraying and stepping on banknotes.
