In a move solidifying ties with a key East African ally, President Joe Biden will host his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, for a state visit on May 23rd, 2024. This announcement, made by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday, marks a significant development, as Ruto will be the first African leader to receive such an honor since Biden took office.
“The upcoming visit will celebrate the 60th anniversary of U.S.-Kenya diplomatic relations,” Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “It will further strengthen our shared commitment to peace, security, economic growth, and democratic values.”
The visit holds additional weight considering the U.S.’s strategic interests in Africa and the growing influence of rivals like Russia and China. Kenya’s long-standing commitment to democracy has made it a crucial partner for the U.S., and this high-profile meeting underscores Biden’s pledge to prioritize Africa, as highlighted during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in December 2022.
While Biden initially promised to visit Africa in 2023, the trip didn’t materialize. Given his focus on the upcoming reelection bid, a visit this year appears less likely. However, hosting Ruto for a state visit reaffirms the Biden administration’s dedication to fostering strong partnerships with African nations.
The state visit will follow established protocol, featuring a grand welcome with military honors, official speeches, and a state dinner. This significant event is expected to solidify and expand cooperation between the United States and Kenya on various fronts, contributing to mutual prosperity and regional stability.
