Sudan’s Zamzam camp faces deadly famine

The war in Sudan and restricted aid have caused famine in North Darfur, likely affecting other conflict areas, according to a food security experts’ report.

This is the third famine declaration in 20 years.

The famine finding uses the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system, highlighting severe starvation in Sudan.

Over 15 months of conflict have displaced millions and left 25 million needing urgent aid.

A famine classification might prompt a UN Security Council resolution to allow cross-border aid delivery.

The Famine Review Committee reports famine in North Darfur’s Zamzam camp, likely persisting until October.

Zamzam, housing 500,000 near al-Fashir, is suffering from famine due to conflict and restricted aid.

Similar conditions might affect other Darfur camps like Abu Shouk and Al Salam, the FRC stated.

An IPC process noted 14 Sudanese areas, including El Gezira and Kordofan, at famine risk.

Reuters reports people eating leaves and soil, with satellite images showing rapid cemetery expansion as famine worsens.
