At least 48 people have been killed in a tragic fuel tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria, according to the State Emergency Management Agency.
The incident occurred on Sunday when a fuel tanker collided with a truck transporting passengers and cattle. The explosion also involved several other vehicles.
Hussaini Ibrahim, spokesperson for the agency, confirmed the death toll of 48, with efforts still underway to clear the scene. This disaster comes amid ongoing fuel shortages in Nigeria, exacerbated by a recent 39% price hike imposed by the state-owned NNPC Ltd, marking the second major increase in over a year.
The price surge has led to prolonged queues at gas stations across major cities and towns.
