Cholera cases surge in Sudan as outbreak spreads

Sudan’s health ministry reported a sharp increase in cholera cases across the central states of Sennar, Al Jazirah, and White Nile, with the total number of infections now reaching 23,736.

Following the arrival of 1.4 million cholera vaccine doses on October 5, aimed at inoculating over a million people in River Nile, Kassala, and Gedaref states, health officials have noted rising infections in Al Manaqil (Al Jazirah), Sennar, and White Nile. However, cases are beginning to decline in River Nile, Kassala, and Gedaref, according to a ministry statement.

With 134 new cholera cases and three additional deaths, the cumulative death toll now stands at 672. The outbreak, which began on August 12 after devastating floods and heavy rains, continues to worsen as stagnant water provides breeding grounds for disease.

Dr. Mohamed Ezz Al-Arab Al-Haj, director of Sennar Teaching Hospital, confirmed 946 cholera cases in Sennar alone, including 130 deaths. He highlighted that 150 patients are currently receiving treatment, and a new isolation center has been opened in Deim Al-Mashaykha to manage the growing caseload.

Meanwhile, the health ministry reported an increase in dengue fever cases, with 2,075 infections across six states, including 25 new cases in Kassala. Karari, Omdurman, Bara (North Kordofan), and Kassala are among the hardest-hit areas.

Authorities warn that the real number of cases may be significantly higher, as 80% of healthcare facilities in conflict zones remain non-operational, and 40% of facilities elsewhere are facing disruptions.
