Fresh violence in DR Congo: M23 rebels seize strategic town

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels seized the town of Kalembe in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday. Local sources reported this development as a violation of the ceasefire agreed upon in August. This recent attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region.

The M23 militia, primarily composed of Tutsi fighters, has gained substantial territory since late 2021. Their actions have resulted in widespread displacement of civilians, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the affected areas. The ceasefire, mediated by Angola, had been in place since early August between the DRC army and M23 rebels.

Despite the truce being largely respected by both armies, armed groups continue to violate the agreement. The M23 re-entered Kalembe after clashes with Wazalendo, a militia allied with the Congolese army. Local leader Kabaki Mwanankoyo confirmed the M23’s control over the town, stating that they had been pushing out the Wazalendo since early Wednesday morning.

A Wazalendo spokesperson reported heavy artillery fire from the M23 and confirmed they lost one of their positions. However, they also expressed uncertainty about the current control of Kalembe. This town is crucial for its strategic location along major roads and access to valuable mineral deposits.

The Angolan government condemned the M23’s actions, calling the occupation of Kalembe a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire. Their statement highlighted the danger this poses to efforts for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The region, rich in gold, coltan, and diamonds, has experienced internal strife and violence for nearly three decades.
