NATO guarantees could stop war’s hot stage, says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for NATO to extend security guarantees to Ukrainian-controlled territories to halt the war’s escalation.

In an interview on Friday, Zelensky stated that NATO protection could help end the “hot stage” of the conflict, allowing Ukraine to focus on diplomatic efforts to regain lost territory.

The war has intensified this week, with Russia threatening to strike government buildings in Kyiv and targeting Ukraine’s energy sector.

Zelensky also emphasized the need for guarantees that Russia would not resume its aggression if a ceasefire is reached.

Currently, Russia controls about 18% of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea. Kyiv has rejected ceding land for peace.

Zelensky’s remarks follow growing international discussions on ending the conflict, with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump promising a swift resolution, though without details.

Zelensky has been in talks with Western leaders and appointed Mykhailo Drapaty as Land Forces Commander to strengthen Ukraine’s military.
