Migrant boat sinks off Tunisian coast, killing tens

A devastating migrant tragedy unfolded off Tunisia’s coast on Tuesday when a boat sank, claiming the lives of at least 20 African migrants.

The Tunisian national guard confirmed the grim discovery of the bodies, marking the second deadly incident in just one week.

The boat went down near Sfax, a key departure point for migrants hoping to reach Europe. Just days earlier, the coast guard recovered nine bodies after another boat sank in the same area.

Rescue teams managed to save five survivors from Tuesday’s wreckage, but the search continues for others who may still be missing.

This latest disaster highlights the growing migration crisis in Tunisia. In recent months, the country has overtaken Libya as a major launch point for migrants, many of whom come from sub-Saharan Africa, seeking a better life in Europe.

Tunisia’s coast guard has been stretched thin by the increasing number of migrants attempting the perilous journey. With dangerous waters and overloaded boats, many migrants risk everything for a chance at a new life.

As Tunisia grapples with these tragedies, the international community faces urgent calls for action to address the root causes of migration
