Sources have revealed that the departure of Minni Arko Minnawi, leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, from Port Sudan was a result of mounting pressures from the Port Sudan junta. The SAF junta had reportedly sought to place Minnawi under house arrest following his announcement that he was open to communication with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Amid growing calls from Islamist leaders and SAF officials to place Minnawi under house arrest in Port Sudan due to his conflicting stance on the war in Darfur and South Kordofan, sources confirmed that Minnawi’s departure was a direct response to these pressures. His criticism of the military’s focus on El Fasher and the neglect of other regions in Darfur had already led to increased scrutiny from both SAF factions and media aligned with the Islamic movement.
Minnawi publicly accused certain leaders of fixating on the El Fasher front while ignoring other critical areas in Darfur, which he argued undermined the official narrative of the SAF’s victories across multiple fronts. His comments on the ongoing war, particularly regarding the RSF withdrawal from Khartoum, Sennar, and the Gezira region, led to an increase in hostility towards him from pro-SAF factions, especially in media circles associated with the Islamic movement and its paramilitary forces.
