Libya’s al-Menfi meets US envoy on elections

Libya’s Presidency Council chief Mohamed al-Menfi met US chargé d’affaires Jeremy Berndt Tuesday in Tripoli to accelerate political reforms.

The officials emphasised the urgency of reviving Libya’s transition, stressing that only a comprehensive settlement can pave the way for credible elections. They underlined that elections are essential to reunify state institutions and end years of political fragmentation that have destabilised the country.

Their discussions also covered political, economic, and security developments, alongside prospects for deeper cooperation between Washington and Tripoli. The meeting followed UN envoy Hanna Tetteh’s presentation of a new roadmap to the Security Council, calling for elections within 18 months.

For years, the UN has sought to guide Libya toward elections amid rivalry between Tripoli and Benghazi administrations. Many Libyans view the long-delayed vote as the only solution to end over a decade of conflict and interim arrangements since 2011.

Al-Menfi and Berndt also addressed support for the Higher Financial Committee overseeing expenditures of the National Oil Corporation and state electricity company. The council said the discussions aim to strengthen transparency, accountability, and good governance within Libya’s sovereign institutions.

The committee, established last July, seeks to resolve disputes over fair distribution of oil revenues, Libya’s main source of wealth. Libya stands at a pivotal moment, as domestic consensus and international support converge to potentially end years of political stagnation.
