Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti and leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), outlined a vision of self-sufficiency and regional cooperation in a video conference. He vowed that Sudan would end its reliance on humanitarian aid within a year, signalling a strategic shift amid deepening crisis.
Sudan faces the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 12 million displaced and 30 million needing assistance, according to the IRC. Dagalo emphasised strong ties with Egypt and Ethiopia, focusing on cooperation over the Nile and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
A UN official recently urged the three nations to pursue fair negotiations to balance energy and water needs. He pledged to harness Sudan’s vast oil, mineral, and agricultural resources to drive development and self-reliance.
Dagalo also sought improved relations with Eritrea, expressing respect for its interests despite historical rifts. He cited Ethiopia’s development under Abiy Ahmed as a model, despite ongoing political challenges there.
