Suspects arrested in $102 million Louvre jewel heist near Paris

French authorities have arrested suspects in connection with the high-profile daylight heist of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum, a prosecutor said Sunday.

The arrests occurred Saturday evening near Paris, including one suspect taken into custody at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to leave the country. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau did not specify the number of arrests or detail the suspects’ identities.

The theft – which occurred Oct. 19 and targeted eight jewel pieces valued at about USD 102 million – exposed vulnerabilities in the museum’s security. Beccuau warned that media leaks about the arrests could hamper the work of the more than 100 investigators involved in the case.

The Louvre reopened after the incident, but the probe continues. No confirmation has been given yet on whether any of the stolen items have been recovered.
