Malian forces neutralize 12 militants in Douentza

Malian forces “neutralised” around a dozen terrorists during an operation Sunday in the country’s troubled Douentza region, the army said.

The operation took place between Bambara-Maoude and Inadjatafane, according to a statement issued by the Malian Armed Forces, known by its French acronym FAMa.

The army did not identify the armed groups targeted in the sweep, nor did it provide further operational details.

“No effort will be spared by the FAMa to ensure the protection and free movement of people and their property,” the statement said.

Mali has grappled with persistent insecurity for more than a decade, particularly across its central and northern regions.

Armed groups linked to militant organisations, as well as local communal conflicts, have carried out repeated attacks against security forces and civilians.

Vast desert expanses and fragile state control have allowed insurgent networks to entrench themselves across remote territories.

The Douentza region lies along key transit routes and near the strategic Niger River corridor, areas frequently targeted by armed groups.

The military regularly announces counterterrorism operations as it seeks to reassert state authority and restore stability.

Authorities say such operations aim to curb militant activity and secure major population centres and transport arteries.

Despite repeated offensives, violence continues to cast a long shadow over daily life in many parts of the country.
