SAF drone attack kills dozens at Al-Mujlad market

A drone strike on a busy market in the town of Al-Mujlad in Sudan’s West Kordofan state killed and wounded dozens of civilians on Wednesday morning, according to a statement issued by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF accused General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) — which it described as being aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamist movement — of carrying out the attack using unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to the statement, the strike targeted the central market in Al-Mujlad, an area typically crowded with civilians, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

The RSF said the repeated targeting of markets and other civilian sites reflects what it described as a pattern of attacks against civilian populations and vital infrastructure, aimed at terrorizing local communities and disrupting their livelihoods.

The group also claimed that the area struck contained no military presence, calling the attack a violation of international humanitarian law.

It warned that the repeated nature and widening scale of such incidents raise concerns that certain communities may be systematically targeted, potentially amounting to crimes that warrant international investigation.

The RSF condemned the attack and called on the United Nations and international and local human rights organizations to issue a clear condemnation and launch independent investigations to determine responsibility.

The group said accountability was necessary to prevent further attacks on civilians and to ensure protection for local populations.

The Sudanese conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, while repeated airstrikes and drone attacks have increasingly struck civilian areas across the country.
