Sudan’s RSF detains dozens in Abu Jabra following tribal violence

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces launched a large-scale campaign in Abu Jabra, East Darfur, detaining dozens, including community leaders, following deadly tribal clashes to establish the rule of law in the region.

Authorities closed the weekly market after violence killed 14 people and injured six, and imposed an indefinite ban on public gatherings while troops surrounded the town.

Local sources said the arrests targeted members of rival groups linked to fighting in nearby Al-Arid, where clashes erupted over construction of a donkey-powered water station on disputed land.

Detainees were transferred under heavy security to Al-Daein as officials sought to contain escalating tribal tensions rooted in competition over land and scarce resources.

Women were among those injured in the crossfire, highlighting the human toll of recurring communal violence in Sudan’s western regions.

Officials warned the situation remains fragile despite mediation efforts, with residents facing closed markets, military patrols and uncertainty over renewed conflict.
