Donald Trump said Friday that the United States could reopen the Strait of Hormuz and potentially profit from oil flows, as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
“With a little more time, we can easily open the Hormuz Strait, take the oil, and make a fortune. It would be a ‘gusher’ for the world,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which roughly 20% of global oil supply passes, has faced disruption since the United States and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran.
Trump’s remarks add to a series of mixed signals from Washington regarding its intentions for the waterway, which remains central to global energy markets.
The region has been on high alert since the launch of the US-Israeli air campaign on Feb. 28, which has reportedly killed more than 1,300 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. The attacks have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and contributed to ongoing volatility in global energy markets.
