Nigeria’s government has filed 13 criminal charges against six former security officials accused of plotting a violent overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government last year, court documents showed on Tuesday.
Prosecutors charged a retired army major-general and others with treason, terrorism, and terrorism financing, while a seventh suspect remains at large.
Attorney-General and Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi filed the case on Monday at a federal court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, marking a key procedural step in a case drawing national attention.
The case represents the most serious treason prosecution since Tinubu took office in 2023, underscoring rising internal security pressures.
It comes amid economic strain, an Islamist insurgency in northern Nigeria, and growing political frictions testing the government’s stability.
In October, Tinubu replaced the military leadership in a sweeping shake-up described by aides as an effort to bolster security against escalating threats.
