Chad clashes leave 42 dead in Guereda water well dispute

At least 42 people were killed in ethnic clashes in eastern Chad, a government official said Sunday, authorities confirmed there.

Saturday clashes in Guereda sub-prefecture of Wadi Fira province began as a dispute over a communal water well, officials said.

Several ministers, senior local officials, and the military chief of staff were dispatched to the scene on Sunday immediately there.

Limane Mahamat, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, said on state broadcaster situation under control remains.

For several years, eastern Chad has been plagued by conflicts between farmers and nomadic Arab herders across rural regions repeatedly.

Tensions have been exacerbated by refugees fleeing fighting in neighbouring Sudan, which has strained local resources and security further still.

Conflicts over farmland and grazing land caused over 1,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries between 2021–2024, International Crisis Group said report.
