Khalid Dana’a, information minister and official spokesperson for Sudan’s Peace Government, said the forced displacement of residents from the Ghabat Ko area in al-Butana, Gedaref state, amounts to “a crime against humanity and a fully fledged war crime.”
In a press statement, Dana’a called for the incident to be condemned and for those responsible to be held accountable through both local and international legal mechanisms.
He said the events in Ghabat Ko were “not an isolated incident,” but part of a wider pattern of violations targeting civilians in different parts of Sudan during the war, including areas inhabited by Kanabi communities in Gezira and Sennar states.
Dana’a accused the de facto authority in Port Sudan, along with groups he described as “extremist,” of being behind practices rooted in racism and regional discrimination.
He said the Peace Government condemned what it described as violations against civilians and stood ready to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected, including shelter, food and medicine, without discrimination.
Dana’a added that the displacement of residents from the Bab Ko area is being followed by judicial and legal bodies affiliated with the Peace Government, saying efforts are underway to document the facts and pursue relevant legal procedures.
