UN warns Sudan faces rising acute hunger risk by late 2026

Sudan is among thirteen global hotspots at risk of a sharp rise in acute hunger by late 2026, according to a UN early-warning report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

The report warns of worsening food insecurity driven mainly by armed conflict and shrinking humanitarian funding.

Alongside Sudan, Syria, Yemen and Palestine are identified as key crisis zones in the Arab region, with Palestine facing a growing famine risk amid ongoing military operations and severe infrastructure damage.

Restrictions on movement and trade continue to limit access to food and essential aid, while conflict remains the main driver of severe hunger in 12 of the 13 hotspots.

Other high-risk countries include South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and Haiti.

The UN also highlights a 59% drop in global aid funding, warning it has severely weakened response efforts.

It calls for urgent ceasefires and unrestricted humanitarian access to prevent further deterioration.
