Peace Government urges immediate humanitarian truce in El Obeid

The Sudan Peace Government said it is ready to coordinate fully with the international community to open safe corridors for civilians in El Obeid and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, calling for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian truce to ease the suffering of residents.

In a statement issued by its Council of Ministers, the government said it was closely following ongoing discussions with international partners, particularly the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the African Union, on protecting civilians and ensuring unhindered humanitarian access.

The government renewed its call for the opening of safe routes that would allow civilians wishing to leave El Obeid to reach areas where protection, security and legal guarantees are available. It said it remained fully committed to securing humanitarian assistance and ensuring aid reaches those in need without discrimination, in coordination with UN and regional organizations.

The statement accused the SAF junta and its allied Islamist brigades of imposing severe restrictions on civilian movement, preventing residents from leaving the city, carrying out forced recruitment, using civilians as human shields and shelling residential neighborhoods with drones and explosives.

It described those actions as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.

The Council of Ministers urged the international community to exert maximum pressure on the Muslim Brotherhood and its army to respond immediately to calls for a humanitarian truce, saying the group had repeatedly rejected international initiatives aimed at halting hostilities.

The statement said an immediate and unconditional humanitarian pause remains the most effective path to protecting civilians, delivering aid and evacuating the wounded and sick.
