UN condemns ambush on humanitarian convoy in South Sudan

The United Nations said it is deeply saddened after five humanitarian workers were killed in South Sudan ambush incident.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told a news conference Tuesday the convoy operated by a local partner was ambushed Monday in Duk County, Jonglei State.

Four others were injured, and several civilians were also reportedly killed or injured in the attack on a clearly marked humanitarian convoy.

We join our resident and humanitarian coordinator Ramanathan Balakrishnan in strongly condemning the attack, Dujarric said at the briefing Tuesday.

The spokesperson called for a prompt investigation, saying attacks on humanitarian workers are unacceptable and violate international humanitarian law.

Since January, 29 humanitarian workers and contractors have been killed in South Sudan according to UN figures.

The John Dau Foundation said its convoy travelled between Payuel Payam and Pajut in Panyang Payam in Duk County after WFP-supported training session when attacked.

The organisation described the incident as its most grievous chapter and called for solidarity and support for bereaved families.
