Al Baraa commander moves to form new political party in Sudan

Al Misbah Abu Zeid, commander of the Al Baraa Ibn Malik Corps, is reportedly moving to establish a new political party in Sudan, according to a source cited by Al Rakoba.

The source said Al Misbah’s efforts began with internal contacts involving several Sufi orders and native administration leaders, followed by meetings abroad.

According to the report, Al Misbah recently met Sufi and tribal figures and informed them of his intention to launch a political party that would move beyond the legacy of the Islamic Movement and the former National Congress Party.

The source also claimed that Al Misbah expressed dissatisfaction in private meetings with native administration figures and Islamist leaders over the way Ahmed Haroun has managed political and party affairs, arguing that Sudan’s current Islamist political approach needs to be reviewed.

The reported move comes after a controversial regional tour by Al Misbah. Refugee leaders in Uganda’s Kiryandongo camp had rejected a planned visit by the Al Baraa commander, warning that Sudanese refugees had fled the war in search of safety and should not be drawn into the agendas of armed actors.

Separately, reports in June said Rwandan authorities had briefly detained and deported Al Misbah before he travelled to Tanzania, adding further questions over the political and mobilisation goals behind his foreign meetings.

Al Misbah’s recent tour reportedly included Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, where he met Sudanese communities and refugees. The visits have fuelled speculation over whether Islamist-aligned military figures are seeking to reposition themselves politically as Sudan’s war continues.
