Future Bank opened a branch in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, on Monday, seeking to restore banking services disrupted by Sudan’s war, local Sudanese media reported.
Banks across the state stopped operating after fighting erupted on April 15, 2023, with their premises subjected to looting, theft and destruction.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the bank’s director-general, Al-Sheikh Faqiri Al-Jubouri, said the new branch would meet growing demand for financial services in West Darfur.
The bank offers transactions in Sudanese pounds and US dollars, domestic and international transfers, and electronic banking through its mobile application, he said.
Al-Jubouri said Future Bank now has seven branches and plans to open three more next year, bringing its network to 10. It also aims to expand financing for imports and exports.
Business community representative Tijani Youssef called for improved transfer services and additional branches across West Darfur’s localities.
He also urged the bank to offer transactions in the currency used in neighbouring Chad, citing close trade and economic ties across the border.
More than 3,000 accounts have been opened amid strong public interest, according to the report. Residents and business owners hope renewed access to banking will facilitate money transfers and support trade and investment in the state.
