Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and US presidential adviser Massad Boulos held fresh talks on Sudan on Wednesday as Washington and regional powers continue efforts to secure a ceasefire and political process in the war-torn country.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the two officials spoke by telephone on September 30 as part of continuing consultations between Cairo and Washington on regional and international issues.
The discussions covered bilateral relations as well as developments across the region, with Sudan among the main issues on the agenda, ministry spokesman Nader Zaki said.
Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s position in favour of preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also calling for the protection of what Egypt describes as the country’s legitimate national institutions.
Egypt has repeatedly used similar language throughout the conflict, stressing opposition to the fragmentation of Sudan or the creation of rival state structures.
The talks come amid an intensified US-led diplomatic effort to secure a humanitarian truce and eventually a permanent ceasefire. Boulos has been working with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates through the Quad mechanism, alongside the African Union and other international partners.
Washington has proposed a 90-day ceasefire followed by political negotiations, a plan that has faced resistance from the army-aligned Port Sudan authorities. The United States has also said that neither Sudan’s military nor the Rapid Support Forces represents legitimate governance for the country.
Abdelatty and Boulos met in New York earlier this month, including during talks involving the army-appointed foreign minister, as diplomatic efforts intensified around the UN General Assembly. Those discussions also focused on de-escalation, humanitarian access and prospects for a political settlement.
The war between the Sudanese military and the RSF erupted in April 2023 and has since triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crises.
