Egypt to host summit on ‘Palestinian cause’ on Saturday

Leaders in Qatar and Kuwait have been invited to a summit in Cairo scheduled for Saturday.

The summit will aim to address the developments and future prospects concerning the Palestinian cause and the peace process.

A day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Cairo, state media in Qatar and Kuwait have announced that their respective countries have received invitations for a regional and international summit on the future of the Palestinian cause to be hosted by Egypt.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has declared it will convene an extraordinary meeting of its foreign ministers on Tuesday to address the evolving situation in the Gaza Strip.

A decade into the ongoing violent conflict between Hamas and Israel, diplomatic initiatives have achieved limited success as global and regional leaders endeavor to secure humanitarian assistance and avert potential regional repercussions.

The relentless aerial campaign initiated by Israel in response to a Hamas attack on October 7 has claimed the lives of at least 2,750 people in the Gaza Strip, with casualties predominantly among civilians on both sides.

Egypt, a historical mediator between Hamas and Israel, has been at the forefront of diplomatic efforts, advocating for “restraint” and a return to the political process.

In Cairo, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna stated on Monday that Paris “welcomes Egypt’s initiative” for the summit.

She said it would “show that there is a political horizon that can take into account Israel’s right to security and the Palestinians’ right to a state”.

Blinken, who returned to Israel on Monday after a regional tour, had expressed on Sunday that “these kinds of initiatives are good ideas”.
