President of South Sudan dismisses cabinet members

South Sudan President Salva Kiir has taken action by dismissing two ministers and the governor of Warrap state in the north.

The decree, broadcasted on state TV Monday night, announced the removal of Barnaba Marial Benjamin, the minister of presidential affairs, and Kuol Athian, the minister of trade.

Additionally, Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro, previously serving as the public service minister, has been reassigned as the minister for presidential affairs.

The announcement did not provide any specific reasons for these dismissals. However, these actions follow the recent ousting of multiple security officials, including the police chief, amid rumors of a potential coup.

These developments occur in the lead-up to South Sudan’s inaugural democratic election since gaining independence in July 2011. Although scheduled for December next year, an exact date for the elections has not yet been determined.
