The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) faces the possibility of suspending aid to over a million people in Chad, many of whom are refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan, owing to financial constraints and escalating humanitarian demands, as per UN statements.
Sudan’s seven-month-long civil conflict involving the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in the displacement of over six million individuals from their homes.
Among them, approximately 450,000 have sought refuge in neighboring Chad, according to the UN refugee agency.
“To insure continued support to crisis-affected populations in Chad over the next six months the WFP urgently requires $185m (£150m),” said the UN secretary-general’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq.
Unless the UN secures the necessary funds, the WFP might have to cease food aid operations for internally displaced persons and refugees in Chad by December, warned Mr. Haq earlier this week.
Moreover, if the funding gap persists, aid provision would also halt in January for all existing aid beneficiaries in Chad and for any new arrivals from Sudan.
