Health authorities in The Gambia have issued a public alert as the nation grapples with widespread dust covering many areas, including the capital city of Banjul.
The health ministry cautioned citizens about potential health hazards linked to prolonged exposure to the airborne dust, highlighting the risk of chronic respiratory and lung issues.
In an official statement, the ministry emphasized that finer particles from the dust could infiltrate the lower respiratory tract and even enter the bloodstream, posing risks to various internal organs and potentially leading to cardiovascular problems such as stroke.
As a precautionary measure, the public has been urged to minimize outdoor activities and stay indoors whenever feasible. Those venturing outside have been advised to wear masks and protective eyewear.
Additionally, people have been encouraged to maintain hydration levels by consuming ample water.
Motorists are specifically cautioned about reduced visibility on roads due to the dust, urging them to exercise caution while driving.
The occurrence of dust storms is common during the dry seasons in The Gambia, prompting health warnings and safety measures to mitigate potential health risks associated with these conditions.
