Algerian man sets himself on fire in suspected coordinated plot

Algerian authorities have opened a counterterrorism investigation after a man set himself on fire outside the justice ministry in Algiers.

Faouzi Zegout, the man involved, sustained injuries in the June 1 incident, which prosecutors now suspect was part of a coordinated foreign-linked plot.

A video circulating online shows Zegout blaming a judge who had allegedly threatened him with a decade-long prison term.

Five individuals have been detained in connection with the case, with one released under judicial supervision, prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday.

Authorities say the case has been transferred to a counterterrorism division due to evidence of orchestration by an organised criminal group.

The group reportedly planned the act in advance, assigning roles including filming and sharing the footage to stir public unrest.

Prosecutors stated the charges include endangering lives and spreading false and harmful information through online platforms.

The person who filmed the self-immolation allegedly communicated with foreign contacts and held multiple bank accounts receiving external transfers.

No specific details were shared about the timing or source of these alleged financial transactions.

Zegout has claimed he recently faced trial for launching an unauthorised fundraiser aimed at covering medical costs for the ill.

The incident took place on the same day a court in Frenda, Zegout’s hometown 340 kilometres west of Algiers, was set to rule on his case.

Prosecutors have not confirmed whether Zegout is among those under formal investigation or detention.
