A tragic road accident in Ivory Coast has left at least 26 people dead and 28 others injured, authorities reported on Friday.
The crash occurred in Brokoua, a village located in the central-western part of the country. Two minibuses collided, resulting in a deadly fire that engulfed both vehicles.
According to the transportation ministry, 10 of the fatalities were caused by the blaze following the crash. Local media shared videos showing the two burning vehicles at the accident site.
The government has launched an investigation into the incident, though no further details have been provided.
The Ministry of Transport has issued a statement urging all road users to remain vigilant and follow traffic laws.
Accidents are sadly common in Ivory Coast, where poor road conditions and reckless driving contribute to a high fatality rate.
The country experiences over 1,000 road deaths annually.
Just last month, a similar crash claimed 21 lives and injured 10 others.
Earlier this year, another deadly collision involving a tanker truck and a bus in northern Ivory Coast left 13 dead and 44 injured.
In an effort to curb the rising number of accidents, authorities introduced a point-based driver’s license system last year.
Drivers now face penalties for traffic violations, with cameras monitoring the country’s major roads to enforce compliance.
