Boat capsizes in Congo, leaving 25 dead, including soccer players

KINSHASA, Congo — A boat carrying passengers across the Kwa River in southwestern Congo capsized on Sunday night, killing 25 people, including several soccer players, officials confirmed Monday.

The victims were returning from a match in Mushie city in Maï-Ndombe province when their vessel overturned, said provincial spokesman Alexis Mputu. Poor nighttime visibility may have contributed to the tragedy, he added.

At least 30 people survived, according to Renacle Kwatiba, the local administrator of Mushie territory. Authorities have not disclosed the total number of passengers aboard.

Deadly boat accidents are common in Congo, where overloaded vessels and poorly regulated river travel pose constant risks. With inadequate roads and limited infrastructure, many of the country’s 100 million people rely on rivers as their primary means of transportation.

In recent years, hundreds have died in similar incidents, as wooden boats—often packed with passengers and cargo—continue to navigate treacherous waters. Despite repeated calls for stricter maritime enforcement, tragedies persist.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the latest disaster, but for many, it is yet another reminder of Congo’s urgent need for improved transport safety.
