Boko Haram kills 33 fishermen and loggers in Nigeria attacks

Boko Haram militants have killed 33 fishermen and loggers in two attacks in Nigeria’s Borno state, sources say.

Twenty-seven fishermen were killed in Mafa district and six loggers in Dikwa district, according to militia and union officials.

The fishermen were intercepted by Boko Haram fighters on motorcycles two kilometres from Mafa town while returning with their catch.

They had been returning with lungfish from a dried-up pond, according to local fishermen’s union official in Maiduguri Nigeria state capital city.

Earlier, six loggers were shot dead by Boko Haram fighters while collecting firewood outside Malam Maja village in Dikwa district.

They were displaced civilians living in makeshift camps near Dikwa town after fleeing earlier militant violence in the region area.

Boko Haram and ISWAP have increasingly targeted farmers fishermen and loggers accusing them of spying for Nigerian military forces regionally.

Two weeks earlier, 18 loggers were killed outside Abaram village in Borno’s Bama district by Boko Haram fighters attack reported.

Tens of thousands have died and millions displaced during a 17-year insurgency devastating Nigeria’s northeast region and communities affected widely.

Most displaced people survive in camps relying on aid but funding cuts are worsening food insecurity across the region severely.
