Boko Haram militants kill 9, injure 4 in northeast Nigeria

Boko Haram militants killed nine people and injured four others in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, authorities reported Sunday.

The attack occurred in the Malam Fatori community, a town located near the border with Chad, approximately 270 kilometers (167 miles) from Borno’s capital, Maiduguri.

The exact timing of the assault remains unconfirmed.

Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by Commissioner Sugun Mai Mele, visited the affected community.

He issued a stern warning to residents against any collaboration with the insurgents, vowing severe repercussions for those found aiding the militants.

The governor also indicated that measures are underway to fortify Malam Fatori against future assaults.

This latest incident highlights a concerning resurgence of Boko Haram attacks across Nigeria’s northeast in recent months.

Extremists have repeatedly overrun military positions, planted roadside bombs, and raided civilian areas.

These renewed aggressions are fueling fears of a return to the peak insecurity experienced during the height of Boko Haram’s insurgency, despite military claims of success in combating the group.

Last month, a suspected female suicide bomber killed at least 10 people in a restaurant in Borno’s Konduga area.

The conflict has since claimed an estimated 35,000 civilian lives and displaced over 2 million people in Nigeria’s northeast, according to the U.N.

Beyond the northeast, Nigeria also faces significant security challenges in its north-central and northwest regions.
