A video that appears to show popular Cameroonian singer Simon Longkana Agno, known as Longue Longue, being tortured has sparked public outrage across Cameroon. Longue Longue, famous for songs criticizing corruption, colonialism, and social injustices, claims the footage dates back to his 2019 arrest, though it is only now being shared publicly.
In the video, Longue Longue is handcuffed, seated on the ground in his underwear, while his feet are reportedly struck with a flat machete. Despite his pleas for mercy, his assailants, whom Longue Longue alleges are security officers, continue the beating.
Cameroonian authorities have issued a statement saying they will investigate the “unfortunate incident.” Longue Longue has vowed to pursue legal action in both Cameroon and France, stating that his arrest in 2019 was for exercising his “freedom of thought” after he posted a video alleging election rigging by long-time President Paul Biya.
The incident has drawn condemnation from figures like opposition leader Maurice Kamto, who claims the video highlights the abuse opposition activists faced following the contested 2018 elections.
Human rights lawyer Akere Muna called the treatment of Longue Longue a “stark reminder of human depravity.” Rights groups accuse the government of fostering impunity within security forces and suppressing dissent ahead of the 2025 presidential election.
