Chad announced on Thursday it is suspending visa issuance to American citizens after the U.S. included the Central African nation in its latest travel ban affecting 12 countries.
President Idriss Deby said in a statement on Facebook that the move was based on the principle of reciprocity.
“I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens,” Deby wrote.
“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and pride,” he added, in an apparent jab at a recent $400 million plane gifted to U.S. President Donald Trump by Qatar.
Chad is one of seven African nations listed in the newly expanded U.S. travel restrictions, which Washington says are necessary for national security.
