Fire on Angola oil rig leaves three dead and seventeen injured

A fire on an oil rig off the coast of Angola has now claimed the lives of three people, according to the country’s oil regulator.

The blaze occurred last week on a platform operated by CABGOC, a gas consortium affiliated with the US energy company Chevron, and initially injured 17 individuals.

Two of the injured had been evacuated to South Africa for medical treatment but succumbed to their injuries there, the National Oil and Gas Agency reported on Wednesday.

A third fatality was discovered near the offshore platform, situated 96 kilometers (60 miles) from the coast.

Authorities are currently working to identify the body and have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Angola, with a population of 37 million, is the second-largest exporter of crude oil in Africa, with oil accounting for over 90 percent of its total exports, as per World Bank data.
