Kenya’s President William Ruto announced Thursday that he had spoken with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir following the arrest of South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar.
In a post on social media platform X, Ruto revealed that the conversation focused on the tense situation leading to Machar’s detention.
He also mentioned consulting with the leaders of Uganda and Ethiopia to address the escalating crisis.
Ruto confirmed that Kenya would send a special envoy to South Sudan to mediate.
The envoy’s mission will be to engage in peace efforts, deescalate tensions, and report back to Kenya on developments.
The move reflects Kenya’s commitment to promoting stability in the region, as tensions in South Sudan remain high.
The diplomatic intervention aims to prevent further violence and facilitate dialogue between the country’s key political figures.
Ruto’s actions come at a crucial time as South Sudan struggles with political instability and internal divisions.
