Kenyan MP found injured on coffee farm after alleged abduction

Kenyan lawmaker George Koimburi was found on a coffee farm Monday after an alleged abduction, according to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Koimburi, a government critic, was reportedly beaten and is now hospitalized in serious condition.

Koimburi, who represents Kiambu County, was allegedly seized outside a church on Sunday. His wife said he was forced into a vehicle in broad daylight. A motorcyclist discovered him early Monday in Ruiru, about 10 km from where he was taken.

The incident has fueled opposition outrage. Gachagua accused the government of targeting dissenters, while opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka said security had deteriorated to the point that even MPs were not safe.

Kenya has seen a spate of abductions since protests over tax hikes last year. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights says over 80 people have been abducted, blaming state security forces—a claim the government denies. President William Ruto recently pledged to curb abductions but offered no specifics.

Koimburi, already facing charges of forgery and alleged land fraud—both of which he denies—remains under police investigation. His alleged abduction follows the assassination of another MP in February, further heightening security fears in the country.
