Kenya’s impeached deputy claims security withdrawn

Kenya’s impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced on Sunday that his security team had been withdrawn.

He expressed concerns for his safety, stating President William Ruto would be accountable if anything happened to him.

Gachagua called the impeachment charges politically motivated, labeling them as “the most unfortunate thing” in the country.

He noted his previous support for Ruto’s 2022 campaign.

Police spokeswoman Resila Onyango did not comment but promised to investigate.

Ruto’s spokesperson said they would address the situation later.

Gachagua was impeached on Thursday after parliament approved five charges, including inciting ethnic hatred.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki was confirmed as his replacement, but a court postponed Kindiki’s swearing-in pending Gachagua’s legal challenges.

Ruto has not publicly addressed the impeachment but called for unity during a national holiday celebration.
