Divine Muheto, the reigning Miss Rwanda, was recently arrested for alleged drink-driving and operating a vehicle without a valid license, following a collision that resulted in property damage. The police report indicates she left the scene afterward, though no injuries were reported.
Authorities noted this incident marks Muheto’s second drink-driving offense. The arrest, publicly confirmed on Tuesday after initial speculation, will lead to a court hearing scheduled in Kigali on Thursday, according to a prosecution spokesperson.
Muheto rose to fame as Miss Rwanda 2022, a title that gained significant attention within the country. Since her win, the annual beauty pageant has been paused due to allegations of misconduct within its organizing body.
Drink-driving laws in Rwanda carry penalties of five days in custody and a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $110). With thousands of arrests for similar offenses in recent years, officials emphasize that stricter enforcement is linked to a reduction in road fatalities.
